Dentures Q & A

What are complete dentures?

Complete dentures replace all the teeth in your upper or lower tooth arch. Many men and women have both an upper and lower denture to replace all their teeth. If you lose all the teeth in either or both arches because of decay or periodontal disease, dentures can affordably restore your chewing, speaking, and self-confidence.

A complete denture includes a full arch of teeth set in an acrylic base lined with pliable gum-colored material. The dentures suction to your gums for a comfortable and secure fit; you remove the dentures for cleaning every day.

What are partial dentures?

Partial dentures integrate with your remaining natural teeth to replace multiple missing teeth. Whether your missing teeth are all in a row or spaced out throughout your upper or lower tooth arch, partial dentures are a good solution for an affordable removable tooth replacement. Partial dentures help maintain proper natural tooth spacing, improve chewing ability, improve speaking, and restore your full smile.

Usually, partial dentures have a thin metal frame that clips into place using small clasps at the top of your existing teeth. A gum-colored acrylic conceals the metal to make it look like the partial denture is a natural part of your mouth.

Can I get permanent dentures?

Yes, Tuckahoe Family Dentistry offers implant-retained dentures if you’d prefer a permanent tooth replacement option at a lower cost than a full mouth of individual dental implants. Implant-retained dentures include a few (usually four, but possibly more) dental implants placed at the front and back of your tooth arch.

The implants work as a permanent support mechanism for your dentures, which means that implant-retained dentures effectively work as permanent dentures. Implants can support both complete and partial dentures.

How long does it take to get used to wearing dentures?

There’s a short adjustment period, but it will likely surprise you how normal and natural your dentures feel. Dr. Avram has extensive experience in designing customized dentures to fit the unique needs of each patient. He’s focused on minimizing your frustrations and maximizing your comfort as you adjust to wearing dentures. Very quickly, your dentures will feel like your natural teeth.
