Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are porcelain shells that can transform your smile. They're sometimes called instant orthodontics because properly placed veneers can make it look like you've had Invisalign® teeth straightening and/or extensive dental work, even though you didn't.

Some of the many uses of veneers include:

  • Hiding chips
  • Correcting deep discoloration if teeth whitening can't help
  • Making teeth look longer
  • Changing teeth shape

Veneers are an extremely popular cosmetic dentistry procedure. They’re often the main component of a smile makeover because they're fast, minimally invasive, and give you a truly impressive change.

What are the steps in the veneer process?

During your consultation at Tuckahoe Family Dentistry, you plan your teeth transformation with Dr. Avram. If you're ready to proceed, he can generally get started immediately. It's important to have clean teeth, free from plaque and tartar, before getting veneers so you might need a dental cleaning before Dr. Avram prepares your teeth.

To prepare your teeth for veneers, Dr. Avram gently etches your tooth surfaces. This removes a small portion of tooth enamel to make room for the veneers. He uses advanced digital imaging to capture very precise images and models of your teeth and then designs custom veneers with this information.

After teeth prep and imaging, Dr. Avram places temporary acrylic veneers on your teeth. This gives you a preview of your smile while protecting your teeth until the new veneers are ready. A master laboratory technician uses Dr. Avram's specific plans to fabricate your new ultra-thin porcelain veneers, which usually takes less than three weeks.

At your next appointment, Dr. Avram removes your acrylic veneers and checks the fit and color of your new porcelain veneers. He makes any minor adjustments needed and then uses a multi-step bonding process to ensure excellent veneer fit and stability.

How long do veneers last?

With good care, your stain-resistant veneers can last 10-15 years or more. During your check-ups, Dr. Avram evaluates your veneers to make sure they’re still stable and strong. See Dr. Avram as soon as possible if your veneers get chipped or otherwise damaged so you can keep smiling without interruption.
